This is a reminder to everyone regarding security on our servers, but also a general public notice regarding passwords & hackers. The update to 3.2 on the Control Panel added some security value to our control panel, as well as a few new features we're going to experiment with and roll out as needed. While digging through information regarding these features, I read about some security issues other hosting companies have had regarding email and FTP. Much of this had to do with passwords. I simply want to address one issue.
In some cases, TeraScape may have set your Control Panel password and/or email passwords up for you. This does not mean that you should keep using this password. It is HIGHLY recommended to change these passwords to something else, and something more complex. An ideal password includes UPPER and lowercase letters, numbers and random symbols (#, $, *, -, ~, !). The more diverse the password is, the less likely it is to be hacked and/or hijacked. One place to check the strength of your passwords is http://www.passwordmeter.com/. This will give you an idea of just how strong your password is.
We also recommend not using the same password for your control panel and websites & services you've signed up to as you do your hotmail, gmail or yahoo email. Many times, people use the same password for many different accounts. If your hotmail account becomes compromised, the rest of your accounts are equally compromised. If you have the slightest feeling that you may have compromised your password, either by logging onto a service from another's computer or an internet bar, or by typing in your password on a phishing site, then by all means, change your passwords.
Phishing sites can include links from emails asking you to "confirm your account details" at any number of banks. Also, sites that claim that they can tell you who "blocked" you on MSN, Skype or QQ can also steal your password and use your accounts for malicious purposes. Be wary of the sites you visit.
Keep your details & information safe by not only using a highly encrypted password, but also by changing it regularly.
